Hormone Tests

Hormone Tests

Hormones are biochemical messengers produced in your endocrine glands that keep your body functioning optimally. They are responsible for regulating bodily functions such as metabolism, sleep, appetite, and mood, spurring growth, modulating sexual and reproductive processes, and preventing disease. Imbalances with these vital biochemicals can lead to chronic illness, dysfunction, pain, and emotional distress. Health Today Health supports our client’s overall health, wellness, and quality of life by offering you a number of screening tools that provide insight into your hormonal balance and to protect you against life altering events.

Know Your Risk

Common causes of hormonal imbalance or deficiency include:

  • Certain Medications
  • Injury and Trauma
  • Aging
  • Eating Disorders
  • Cancerous and Benign Tumors
  • Cancer Treatment
  • Stress
  • Thyroid and Adrenal Conditions
  • Other Diseases such as Addison’s and Cushing Syndrome

In order to achieve and maintain optimal health your body needs to have hormonal balance. Identifying imbalances can offer you and your doctor insight into underlying causes of infertility, sexual and reproductive health and dysfunction, cancer risk, disease risk, mental health disorders, and issues affecting quality of life.

Health Today Health Hormone Screening

Health Today Health offers the following simple blood tests to provide insight into hormonal health:

  • Testosterone: This test can measure testosterone levels in both males and females. Testosterone in males regulates muscle and bone mass, strength, fat distribution, and the production of red blood and sperm cells. In females, testosterone is converted into estrogen and regulates fertility and libido, and breast, bone, menstrual, and vaginal health.
  • Progesterone: In females progesterone is important for assessing fertility and reproductive health, and in evaluating high-risk pregnancies. In males, progesterone is a building block of testosterone and can provide insight into libido, erectile dysfunction, and prostate health. This test measures progesterone levels in the blood.
  • Estradiol: Estradiol is useful for screening for pituitary and adrenal gland function. It is a form of estrogen. In females it is produced in ovaries, breasts, and adrenal glands. In males estradiol is made in the testes and adrenal glands. Estradiol, Mass Spectrometry measures estradiol levels in the blood.
  • DHEA-S: This screening measures the levels of dehydroepiandrosterone-sulfate. DHEA-S is a sex hormone that plays a role in testosterone production in males and estrogen production in females. Abnormal levels could indicate adrenal gland or testicle or ovary concerns.
  • Thyroid: This test measures the levels of TSH, or thyroid-stimulating hormone in the blood. This is indicative of thyroid function. Your thyroid is responsible for mood and body temperature regulation, energy and weight regulation, and strength.

FAQs

The treatment for hormone imbalance is very dependent on the specific hormone and the cause of imbalance. There are options for treatment ranging from hormone replacement therapy and medications to natural supplements and lifestyle changes. In some cases, treatment of the underlying cause of the imbalance will allow the body to restore hormone levels naturally.

There is a very wide range of signs that could indicate hormonal irregularities including: unexplained weight gain or loss, body aches and pains, increased thirst or hunger, skin and hair conditions, changes in libido, mood swings and depression or anxiety, changes in vision, and more. Hormone screening can provide useful insight to you and your doctor about how your hormone level may be affecting your overall health.
